some elements of the combat mechanics were developed by me. they originated from my head. Most of the combat mechanics came from other stories i read.
The base of the combat system in this novel came from me reading David Weber's starfire series. The idea of each star system connected to other star systems using wormholes primarily came from starfire. Many other authors have similar systems of ftl travel but david weber's starfire is where i based mines from. Similarily, the fact that ships can go instantaneously to a fraction of c also came from starfire, but whereas david weber allowed for kinetic velocity to be able to be turned into kinetic energy (meaning he allowed his ships to ram other ships), i didn't. my ships had no kinetic energy stored in their structures when they were moving fast. basically, my mechanism for movement was sublight warp. there was no kinetic energy stored up, ready to be unleashed, and there was no relativistic effects because the ships were "warping" through space in their warp bubbles, not actually "moving" through space.
Whereas david weber had ships that launched missiles incrementally, i chose to launch them all at once. i didn't like the idea of having to launch a little by little, that didn't make sense to me. (in my other novels, i do have them being launched incrementally, but there is usually a technological/physical reason)
Whereas david weber sometimes had 100 stationary forts defending a warp point, i maxed out with two.
The idea of a technology that allowed ships to bypass the traditional system-to-system wormhole chain (the artificial wormhole nexus tech that enabled the bad guys at the beginning of the novel to be winning the war so bad) and go straight into a system of your choice -- that idea came from Christopher nuttal. I was reading vanguard or i forgot... some other of his books and i used that idea he made up where a fleet could bypass the chain of traditional wormholes (bypass the enemy's defended frontlines) to make the premise of my novel, which is that the bad guys (the argonans) had already wrecked our core industrial systems and were about to attack earth.
As for the idea of using flak explosives to destroy enemy missile and fighter waves, as well as using point defense lasers, that came from reading doug Dandridge's exodus: empires at war series. you'd think that i could make that up by myself, but nope!
so basically, 80% of this novel was stolen from others. i hope you're cool with that, because i am. lol
